All designs varied: Six showed kayakers on Lake Superior enjoying the natural rock formations and sea caves. A few of those designs featured a lighthouse in the background. The three other proposed designs highlighted the park’s natural beauty, focusing only on the water, rock formations and sea caves.

After the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) reviews designs, the U.S. Mint recommends the favorites to the Secretary of the Treasury who then makes the final selection.

The Apostle Islands coin will honor this beautiful park that’s home to 21 islands, many sea caves and wonderful rock formations, plus the largest number of lighthouses found in any national park.
